Expressive Arts Therapy
When words alone are not enough to convey a feeling, sensation, or experience, we can benefit from expressing ourselves non-verbally. The process of creating (even more than the product of creating) can offer a glimpse into unconscious factors of healing and setback, metaphors for integrating change, fresh perspective on old patterns, and opportunities to be seen by another. One does not need to have previous experiences with or “be good at” artmaking to benefit from engaging with it therapeutically.
From Psychology Today’s website: Expressive arts therapy combines psychology and the creative process to promote emotional growth and healing. This multi-arts, or intermodal, approach to psychotherapy and counseling uses our inborn desire to create—be it music, theater, poetry, dance, or other artistic form—as a therapeutic tool to help initiate change.
