Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) refers to a specific and highly effective type of therapeutic intervention aimed at processing information and reducing emotional suffering. The use of bi-lateral stimulation used in EMDR has been shown to be a powerful aid in the reduction of symptoms associated with PTSD, anxiety and depression. The bi-lateral stimulation used in EMDR activates what is referred to as the adaptive information processing system of the brain, thus allowing for otherwise painful memories , feelings and thoughts to be more easily integrated into ones experience. This process of desensitization or integration makes it possible to truly begin to ”put the past behind you”. EMDR is an evidence based practice supported by years of clinical trials and is to be performed by trained clinicians only.
EMDR psychotherapy is an information processing therapy and uses an eight phase approach to address the experiential contributors of a wide range of pathologies. It attends to the past experiences that have set the groundwork for pathology, the current situations that trigger dysfunctional emotions, beliefs and sensations, and the positive experience needed to enhance future adaptive behaviors and mental health.
